Manchester / Whiting Visiting & Lodging
Manchester Township is a Pinelands-oriented Ocean County destination shaped by wooded parks, lakes, wildlife-management lands, veterans memorials and nationally significant aviation history. Whiting adds the township's best-known summer recreation site, Harry Wright Lake, plus historic Bowker Field and convenient access to Route 530 and Route 539.
Manchester is also a practical inland base for Lakehurst aviation history, Jackson attractions, Joint Base travel, Toms River and the Jersey Shore while remaining quieter than the coastal resort towns.

Harry Wright Lake: Manchester's Signature Summer Destination
Harry Wright Lake in Whiting is Manchester Township's principal recreational swimming facility and the centerpiece of many of the township's largest summer programs and events.
Swimming BeachesBathing beaches and restroom facilities are located on both sides of the heavily wooded lake. Beach badges are required during the designated summer season.
2026 Summer SeasonThe 2026 recreation schedule lists weekend operation beginning Memorial Day weekend and daily operation from late June through August 31, generally 10 a.m.-6 p.m. for beach facilities.
Concerts & EventsThe low side includes the Township band shell and stage used for Manchester's summer concert programming and major community events.
Family RecreationPlayground areas, volleyball, horseshoes, pavilions, picnic space and extensive parking make the lake more than a swimming stop.

World War II Veterans Memorial ParkManchester's 30-acre veterans memorial and recreation park combines a major World War II monument, restored military equipment, wooded walking trails, playgrounds, sports fields, courts and picnic areas.
Pine Lake Park & PlaygroundShoreline park with splash pad, extensive playground, covered picnic areas, restrooms, a shoreline path and lake access for canoes and kayaks. Beach-badge rules apply seasonally.

Whiting & Manchester Wildlife Management Areas
Manchester Township contains substantial State-managed Pinelands open space. Visitors should distinguish recreational municipal parks from Wildlife Management Areas, where hunting, trapping and other regulated activities may occur seasonally.
Whiting WMAApproximately 1,212 acres of pitch-pine-dominated upland and wetland habitat. NJDEP highlights birding, Pinelands wildlife and fishing for bass, pickerel and panfish in Michaels Run and Wrangle Brook.
Manchester WMAAnother large State Wildlife Management Area within the township, totaling approximately 3,802 acres in current NJDEP acreage records.
Wildlife WatchingWhiting WMA supports seasonal warblers, woodpeckers, owls, snakes, butterflies, damselflies and other characteristic Pinelands wildlife.
Know the RulesWMAs are working conservation lands, not conventional municipal parks. Review current NJ Fish & Wildlife regulations, hunting seasons, parking areas and maps before visiting.
Outdoor-safety reminder: wear visible clothing during hunting seasons, stay aware of seasonal restrictions, check wildfire and prescribed-burn conditions, and do not rely on municipal-park rules when visiting State Wildlife Management Areas.
Lakehurst Aviation & Hindenburg History
The Lakehurst section of Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst is one of the region's most historically significant destinations. It is best known as the site of the 1937 Hindenburg disaster, but its history also includes major U.S. Navy airships, early transatlantic aviation, helicopter development and carrier-aircraft launch and recovery technology.
Navy Lakehurst Historical ToursCurrent guided tours can include the Cathedral of the Air, Hindenburg crash site, Navy Lakehurst Heritage Center, lighter-than-air exhibits, Historic Hangar One and aircraft restorations.
2026 Tour ScheduleApril-October tours are currently scheduled on Wednesdays plus the second and fourth Saturdays, generally 9:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Winter scheduling is more limited.
Advance Security RegistrationVisitors must currently register at least two weeks in advance. Tour access can change because the historic sites are associated with an active military installation.
Lakehurst Historical MuseumNearby Borough of Lakehurst museum at 300 Center Street covers local railroad, resort, military and Hindenburg-era history. Current public hours are Wednesday and Sunday, 12:30-3 p.m.
No casual base access: do not drive to the Hindenburg crash site expecting walk-in public admission. Historical tours require advance arrangements and remain subject to military operations, security conditions and weather.
Where to Stay
Manchester Township has limited overnight lodging within its municipal boundaries. Visitors who want a conventional hotel can stay directly on Route 37, while broader hotel choices are available in Toms River, Lakewood, Jackson and the Joint Base/Wrightstown area.
